Candidates at recruitment agency interview

How to select the right employment agency for your business

Recruiting the right staff for the job is a huge challenge for British business, which is why there are so many employment agencies willing to help out. Last year, over 5,000 recruitment agencies opened their doors, making the UK the third biggest recruitment market in the world, after the US and Japan. With so many agencies to choose from, how do you go about selecting the right employment agency for your business?

How do recruitment agencies screen candidates?

Before taking on an employment agency, ask them about their screening process to find out how they check both a candidates eligibility to work in the UK and also their references. This is vitally important when it comes to temporary staff as companies looking for temps tend to need them immediately. If you know the relevant reference checks have been done rigorously, you don’t have to worry about the quality of the people working for you.

Specialist employment agencies

If your company has specialist recruitment needs, such as healthcare, catering, hospitality, industrial or driving jobs, look for an agency that specialises in your field. A lot of the time, the agencies have been set up by people who used to work in the industry they specialise in, so you can rest assured they know what a good candidate looks like. And because they know the industry inside out, they’re more likely to attract, and keep, the best candidates.

Location location location

There’s only so far someone’s willing to travel for their work, so look for an employment agency which is based near the work you’re offering. If you have vacancies for staff in Hertfordshire for instance, look for a specialist employment agency in Hertfordshire – even if your head office is based in a different part of the country.

How professional is the employment agency?

Take a good look at the agency to make sure their service levels are high. Ask them about their code of conduct, professional qualifications and staff development. What kind of industry qualifications and experience do the specialist staff have, and does the agency belong to an industry body with a rigorous complaints procedure?

What do current clients say about them?

Look at the agency’s testimonials. If there aren’t lots of glowing comments about it on the website, you have to ask yourself, why not? You should also call a couple of their current clients to find out more about their reliability and professionalism.
